Tom Hiddleston apologised for *that* embarrassing Golden Globes speech

“I just wanted to say… I completely agree that my speech at the Golden Globes last night was inelegantly expressed.”

ON SUNDAY NIGHT, Tom Hiddleston won a Golden Globe for his performance in spy drama The Night Manager.

Once on stage, he proceeded to deliver a rather self-righteous speech about a recent visit he to South Sudan with the United Nations Children’s Fund, of which he is an ambassador.

While in South Sudan, he met some humanitarian aid workers who had watched The Night Manager.

One night we were having a bite to eat in the canteen where we were staying and a group of young men and women tottered over to the table and we were all having what they call a “dirty beer” in humanitarian language. And they were a group of MSF doctors and nurses, and they wanted to say hello because during the shelling the previous month, they had binge-watched The Night Manager.

Hiddleston stated that he was proud to have been able to provide “relief” to the aid workers in question and dedicated his award to those “those out there who are doing their best”.

Needless to say, it didn’t go down well with many viewers criticising it as self-congratulatory and tone deaf.

Those in the audience didn’t much care for it either.

Last night, Tom Hiddleston apologised for the speech in a post on Facebook.

“I just wanted to say… I completely agree that my speech at the Golden Globes last night was inelegantly expressed,” he wrote. “In truth, I was very nervous, and my words just came out wrong.”

Sincerely, my only intention was to salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and World Food Programme, and the children of South Sudan, who continue to find hope and joy in the most difficult conditions. I apologise that my nerves got the better of me.

Okay, Tom. We’ll let you off the hook this time. Next time, prepare your speech in advance.
